The Riverside Elementary East and West schools are happy to announce that students entering Grades K-6 for the 2008-2009 school year will be required to participate in our annual Summer Reading Program. Our program will be “your ticket to adventurous travel” through books this summer. Summer Reading has been shown to do the following for students: · Encourage a love and enjoyment of books · Increase vocabulary knowledge · Increase reading fluency · Develop background concepts and general knowledge · Provide models of good writing · Provide maintenance or reading skills learned during the school year · Provide a sense of participation in a community of readers We are sure that you will agree that these are valuable outcomes of Summer Reading! Books may be borrowed at the Taylor Public Library or Scranton Public Library. Parents also have the option to purchase any of the 3 required reading books at any book retailer (Borders, Barnes & Noble etc.). If your child struggles with a book, it is acceptable to read it to them or with them, but encourage their independent reading wherever possible. We hope to make this experience a most memorable “summer” one for both you and your child.
