Three Riverside students recently concluded their season of scholastic ice hockey. Sophomores Gary Lukasiewicz and Marc Lucas, and seventh grader Evan Harbert play ice hockey with the Scranton Area Lightning Ice Hockey Club. The JV and Varsity teams play in the NEPA Scholastic Hockey League. Students from Scranton Area, Scranton Prep, Mid Valley, Riverside, Abington Heights and Lackawanna Trail play for Scranton Area Lightning.  Gary Lukasiewicz was the goaltender for the varsity squad, which finished the season in second place to Susquehanna Valley. In a thrilling semi-final game against Paupack, Gary stopped 47 of 49 shots in regulation and several shots in the five-minute overtime period to preserve a 2-2 tie. In the ensuing shoot-out, he stopped 4 of Paupacks’ five shooters to advance the team to the Championship game against Susquehanna Valley. Over the Christmas holiday, Scranton Area’s varsity team won the Casey Classic hockey tournament at the Wachovia Arena in Wilkes-Barre. It was the first time in the tournament’s 8-year history that Scranton Area Lightning won the Casey Classic title. Gary is also a member of the Midget U16 WBS Jr. Penguins Limited-Travel team.

Marc Lucas and Evan Harbert were members of Scranton’s junior varsity team. As an experienced member of the team, Marc’s role on offense was vital in helping the very young squad compete against some tough opponents.  Seventh grader Evan Harbert gained valuable experience playing in his first season of high school ice hockey. He also plays hockey with the Bantam WBS Jr. Penguins Limited-Travel team.

Marc and Gary were recently inducted into the National Honor Society at Riverside.
