SWB RailRider Mascot Visits East!
Students had on opportunity to meet the SWB
Railriders mascot on Wednesday, March 6. Students
filled out cards to name the mascot.

The 5th Grade Drive for Griffin Pond Animal
Shelter ...
After reading about animals, habitats, and nature in
our Language Arts unit, the fifth graders wanted to help
local animals and our community. They decided to host a
drive to benefit the animals at the Griffin Pond Animal
Shelter. The animal shelter needed more kitten and cat
food, kitty litter, canned dog food, toys, paper towels
and cleaning supplies. All donations were greatly
appreciated!

GIFTED AT RIVERSIDE SCHOOL DISTRICT -Jody
Oustrich (Tobyhanna Army Depot) speaks to numerous
students from the Riverside Elementary Schools. During
their trip, the students learned about recycling,
robotics, engineering, technology, and more.

FAMILY READING NIGHT - Title I teachers from
both East and West Elementary schools ran a workshop for
all at Elementary West Parents and students
participated in activities and were able to seek help
from Riverside teachers and administrators on how they
can help their child with Reading. Hats off to the
parents for a great turnout!!!
The
Annual Kindergarten Holiday Show was held on December
14, 2012. The program was under the direction of
Kindergarten Teachers, Mrs. Chickeletti and Mrs.
Petrucci.
On Wednes day,
January 23rd, Riverside East 4th grade students were
visited by Ms. Cheryl Nolan, Watershed Specialist from
the Lackawanna County Conservation District.
Students interacted with a
scaled down model of a typical Lackawanna County
watershed, that aides in conveying to students, the
importance of preventing pollution caused by human
activity.
PENGUINS VISIT EAST
On Tuesday, January 22, 2013, the Scranton Wilkes-Barre
Pe nguin
players visited Riverside Elementary East students in
grades 4, 5 and 6 for a Commonwealth Health Goals For
Life School Visit. The presentation was led by the voice
of the Penguins, Mr. Tom Grace. Each player spoke
about healthy eating and nutrition, exercising and
playing sports, studying hard and getting good grades,
and being well rounded and avoiding drugs, alcohol and
smoking. Mr. Grace and the players also emphasized
good decision making and the importance of reading.

Career Day during Elementary Sprit Week

On November 17th, Riverside Elementary East hosted
The NED Show
The NED Show, produced by All for KIDZ®, is an
elementary school assembly program promoting positive
attitudes, better behavior & academic achievement in
school. This character education assembly is based on
the acronym NED - Never give up, Encourage others, Do
your best. The NED Show is a high energy, 45-minute
motivational assembly featuring the character NED and
lots of active participation for kids. Presented through
storytelling, humor, visuals and audience participation,
The NED Show utilizes a
multi-sensory learning model to
motivate…encourage…INSPIRE students to become champions
at school and in life.

REE REFELECTIONS WINNERS!

The Moosic Police Department
and Lackawanna County Sheriff’s Office visits Grades K-3
Students in grades K-3 were visited by Officer Jenkins
and Officer Decker from the Moosic Police department and
also Officer George and Police Dog Buzz from Lackawanna
county Sheriff’s Office. Students had an
opportunity to learn about local police responsibilities
and got to see Buzz follow Officer George’s commands.

Third grade East student Molly has been chosen as the
first place winner in the Holiday Poster Contest
by the Lackawanna Susquehanna County Office of Drug
and Alcohol Programs. Her winning design may be featured
on billboards, posters and buttons distributed
throughout the county.

4th Graders Learn
about Weather
Meteorologist
Dave Skutnik of WBRE visited the fourth grade classes at
Riverside Elementary East on Wednesday, November 29th to
talk about weather. Students enjoyed a multimedia
presentation that featured weather instruments,
forecasts, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other interesting
weather information. Students had the opportunity to ask
weather-related questions and even had their picture
taken with Mr. Skutnik!

Scranton Provides Dictionaries to Third Grade Students

Red Ribbon Week --
As part of Riverside Elementary East Red Ribbon Week,
students and staff donated canned goods to a local food
pantry on Thursday, October 25, 2012 for Thanksgiving
dinner. Thank you to all of our students, families and
staff for participating in this worthwhile event.

Unity Day –
Riverside Elementary EAST participated in Unity Day. It
was a day when everyone came together to help put an end
to bullying. All students at each school in the
Riverside district wore orange.

Mr.
Frye Promotes Reading
Students in grades K-2 had the opportunity to visit with
performer, Mr. Bill Frye. His fast-paced, upbeat,
engaging sing-along encourages children to pursue their
dreams and enjoy bed-time story traditions and routines.
He implemented a story from an illustrated children’s
book throughout the program and used familiar, popular
songs for children and adults that relate to dreaming.
Students had the opportunity join Mr. Frye at the
microphone for some of the songs.
Congratulations to one of our 4th grade teachers, Mrs.
Ashley Trolio, and to one of our 5th grade
teachers, Ms. Amber Rugletic.
They were chosen as WVIA Teacher of The Month for
July 2012 for their efforts in Initiating East Recycling
Program.

Riverside announces dates and times for Kindergarten
Orientation:
WEST August 23rd
9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.
EAST August 30th
9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Please bring your child to the school so he/she will
become familiar with the classroom, cafeteria, and the
school bus. Parents and students should report to
the cafeteria. Anyone who is missing any of the
required paperwork should bring it that day.
