Our K-2 students saw a show called, The Illusion Maker's "Do You Believe in Magic" environmental magic show. It  featured the magic of recycling, reusing, reducing, litter abatement, conservation, waste management and stormwater protection. The students left the show with many new ideas on how they can have a positive influence on the environment around them.
More can be seen by clicking here.

The student's from Mrs. Wincovitch's third grade class participated in "Young Author's Day" at Keystone College.

At Keystone College they watched a presentation from Barry Louis Polisar. He an author and songwriter who won a Grammy Award in 2009 for the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture.  All I Want Is You, from the movie, Juno, is the first song in the album.

1,000 BOOK CHALLENGE -
On the first day of school this year Miss Ceccacci challenged her second grade class to read 1,000 books, as a class, by the end of the year. The students were asked to record, on their book records, the title of each book they read throughout the year and to write a few sentences stating their favorite part of the story read. In addition, 100 of these books were used for Scholastic Book Club’s Classrooms Care, to help other schools in need.  Although this challenge was optional, each student in the class participated and contributed to the success and completion of the 1,000 Book Challenge on December 7, 2009.

ECKLEY MINERS' VILLAGE - Mr. Murphy took our fourth grade students to Eckley Miners' Village.  They had a great Saturday afternoon in which they learned about one of the hundreds of company mining towns or "patches" built in the anthracite region of Pennsylvania during the nineteenth century.  For their homepage:  http://www.eckleyminers.org/

MIX IT UP DAY - Schools around the world participated in Mix It Up at Lunch Day 2009.  The event is a simple call to action: take a new seat in the cafeteria. By making the move, students can cross the invisible lines of school division, meet new people and make new friends.  Mr. Yarem organized this event for our school.  Click here for more pictures.

HALLOWEEN
- The REW PTA organized our festivities for the day and supplied the students with treats.  For more pictures, click here.

McTeacher's Night and the Brian Koytek Memorial Scholarship - Mrs. Koytek extends her gratitude to everyone who supported the memorial scholarship fundraiser in the name of her son Brian.  The 1,000+ people that supported the cause was evidence of how nice it is to live in a small community.  From a school district standpoint, it was nice to see that the district employees really care.  The teary-eyed news release on WNEP 16 was just a small snapshot of what really happened at McD's and the high school.  For more pictures, click here.

RIBBON WEEK 2009

Family Math Night”  Parents, students, and teachers got excited about Math at Riverside Elementary’s “Family Math Night” on Thursday, October 15th.  The program was designed to involve parents in the education of their children and to give suggestions on how they can help them with Math at home. Mr. Morgan, one of our Title I Math Teachers, did an outstanding job coordinating this successful event.

CONGRATULATION LOGAN!  Here Logan is pictured with Miss Parise.  His estimation of 2,203 candy corns was closest to the actual amount of 2,160 candy corns.  He won the actual jar of candy corns for Mrs. Penn's class.  We also would like to thank Miss Parise and Mrs. Whetstone's class for raising $183.70 for the Brian Koytek Memorial Scholarship!

Here Christian is shown holding the Kindergarten book, Here I Am.  These Activity Books are free and contain months of simple at-home activities for adults and their Kindergarten students to do at home during their Kindergarten year.  Designed in calendar-format, the activity guide provides months of parenting information and at-home experiences that are linked to Pennsylvania’s Early Learning Standards and support primary education.  Each Kindergarten student has received a copy from the Pennsylvania Department of Education.

Mr. Murphy's 4th grade PA Geography class gets help from 8th grade Family and Consumer  Science Students    Murphy's 4th grade Pennsylvania Geography Class and Miss Mazaleski's 8th grade Family and Consumer Sciences Class, recently collaborated to create a "hands- on" model of Pennsylvania.  Miss Mazaleski's class made a 4-layer white cake from scratch which was part of their cooking lab.  And, Mr. Murphy's class added more cuts and icing to the 4- layer cake to create the topography/geography of Pennsylvania to show a 3-D look of Pennsylvania's physical regions. The class agreed that eating it after was also a great deal of fun!  Great Job to all involved!!!  More pictures can be found on Mrs. Mazaleski's teacher website - click here.

Taylor Fire & Rescue
- Firefighters educated our students about safety during Fire Prevention Week.  They provided our kids with instruction and gave each kid a Fire Prevention Kit.  We thank them for their service!!    For more pictures, click here.

Honoring a Hero - Scranton Fire Captain, James Robeson (a 25 year veteran), died battling a fire on a home in Scranton.  We would like to honor him during Fire Prevention Week.  He is the uncle of Jason (pictured to the right) a student at our school.  We give our thanks and respect to firefighters across the nation!

A message from Mrs. Whetstone (3rd Grade)...
In social studies, out first chapter is all about communities.  We study the different parts of a community, we compare and contrast different communities, and we discuss how we can learn about our own community.  One of our lessons discusses businesses and their role in our community.  We discuss needs and wants, services, how businesses help us, etc.  As an extension activity, my student teacher, Miss Parise, had our class write letters to their favorite businesses from our area.  One of my students (Dylan) wrote to Game Stop in Wilkes Barre.  Today he received a package from them.  It included a Thank You letter along with samples from the store.  We were all excited about this!  We are looking forward to getting other letters back."

The Riverside School District is making an effort to spread awareness about allergies.  Alexis (pictured above) created the logo for our school district to use for peanut allergy awareness.  Look for this logo to pop up a lot more in the future!

ARAMARK -----Once a month a breakfast bag is tagged as the "Lucky Bag".  The child that gets that bag will win a prize.  This month was a tennis racket and balls.  Some of the gifts that will be raffled are geared towards health and wellness.  Getting outside and having fun (tennis, soccer, etc.)  Some gifts may be gift cards.

Winners for September:  Jeffery M. at West, and Chynalynn S. at East.

Did you miss our first PTA meeting?  Don't worry there is still time to join!  Please contact the school if you would like a membership form.  Thank you to everyone who attended!

Kathy Walsh (PLCTA) has awarded Riverside Elementary WEST with some materials on strangers and for emergencies.  These will be used to enhance our guidance curriculum by Mr. Yarem.  We thank them for their help!  PLCTA will also be holding a benefit walk and a dress down day in April, to spread awareness about autism.

Over the Summer, Mr. Craig Reifler and Mr. Chris Feerrar helped guide students
through their Senior project.  At Riverside Elementary WEST, they knocked out old sinks, capped the plumbing, and installed shelving for our 1st and 2nd grade teachers.   We would like to thank them for putting Riverside first and helping buildings other than their own with a much needed project.  They have also provided their students with an experience that they will always remember.  Pictured here:  Nick Van Hoof gets a hands-on lesson in carpentry.
